Taking The Course

Where do I take the course?
In Good Hands is delivered over the Internet. You may study at any location where there is a computer with Internet connection: at your home, at work, at a public library.

How long does it take to complete the course?
We anticipate that it will take approximately 12 hours to study the course material. However, some learners may be familiar with some topics and will take less than 12 hours to complete the course, while others will prefer to spend more time on the topics.

Do I need course materials?
No. In Good Hands is a comprehensive food safety course. All content is provided for you online. You do not need to purchase study guides or course materials to cover the topics.

Who can I contact if I have questions about the course content?

How long do I have to complete the course?
Your password is valid for 6 weeks from the day that we send it to you. You have 6 weeks to complete the course meterial and submit your Request to Certify, if you wish to qualify for a certification exam. After 6 weeks, you password will not be valid.

Accessing The Course

How do I log on?
After you have paid your registration fee, we will send you a password. Access our site at www.ingoodhands.ca and enter your username and password into the login box. The login box is found on the home page.

Why can't I log on to the course?
Please check that you are entering the correct username and password in to the correct spaces in the log-in box. Enter the username and password exactly as they appear in the information that we've provided for you after registration. Please send us an email at info@ingoodhands.ca or phone our toll free line at 1-866-287-8828 if you still experience problems logging on.

Navigating The Course

Do I have to remember how many modules I've completed?
Use My Progress to keep track of where you are in the course. My Progress tracks how many modules you've completed, as well as whether you've completed module quizzes.

I am in the middle of a module, but I want to try another topic. How?
You may leave the module at any time. Simply choose Module Index from the top menu bar. You will be taken to the Module Index, where you can choose a new topic.

How do I know which module to do first?
The Module Index displays all 15 modules. You may choose any module at any time from the Index. We have recommend that you begin with Course Overview. At the end of each module, a forward button will take you to the next module in our recommended sequence.

How do I know which order to complete the modules?
You may complete the modules in any order. However, we have recommended an order. If you choose to complete the modules in our recommended sequence, simply use the forward buttons at the end of each module. These buttons are found on the Conclusion page as well as at the end of each quiz.

Registration

How do I register? Simply choose Sign-up from the top navigation bar. That will take you to a registration page. Fill out the information, pay your course fees and submit your registration. We will send you a confirmation notice at your email address, and you can expect to receive your password immediately.

How do I pay for the course?
You can pay for the course over the Internet, by Visa or Mastercard. Sorry, we do not accept payment by mail.

Can I trust you with my credit card?
Yes, our site is secure. Your personal information will be kept confidential and will only be used by course developers and evaluators. Please read our Privacy Policy for more information.

How long will it take to register?
It only takes a few minutes to register online. After you submit your registration, you can expect to receive your password immediately from us by email.

Do I need an email address?
Yes. You need an email address to receive your password to log on to the course. (If you do not have an email address, please sign up for a free email account at one of the email providers online, e.g. www.hotmail.com)

Yes, we will confirm your registration. You can expect to receive confirmation immediately after registration.

What is the refund policy?
Sorry, registration fees for the course are non-refundable.

Certification

What is certification?
Certification in safe food handling is recognized in the food service industry and means that you are qualified to handle food safely, through a Public Health Unit and according to the Ministry's food safety requirements.

In Good Hands is an approved certification course developed through the Thunder Bay District Health Unit. To obtain safe food handling certification through the In Good Hands course, you must successfully complete the course material and write a proctored certification exam at a health unit in your area.

How do I get a food safety certificate?
In order to be eligible for certification, you must successfully complete the course as well as a proctored certification exam. After completing the online material, you will submit a "Request to Certify". This notifies us that you wish to write a certification exam. We will provide you with contact information for a health unit near you. You must write the exam at a health unit or approved proctoring site in order to become certified. It is up to you to confirm your attendance at the exam with the health unit or testing site by phone.

Where do I write the certification exam?
Certification exams must be written at a health unit or approved proctoring site. After completing the course, you will submit a "Request to Certify". This lets us know that you are ready to take the certification exam. We will then send you further contact information for a health unit in your area. Dates, times and locations of exams in your area must be arranged with your health unit.

How much does certification cost?
Certification fees are typically $10, but fees may vary according to the Health Unit providing the testing service. Contact your local health unit for exact costs of the certification.

Does the online test count for certification?
No. The online test is a practice test that you can use to test your knowledge. The questions in the In Good Hands online test are similar to those that you may find on a certification exam.

What is a Request to Certify?
A Request to Certify lets us know that you are ready to write a certification exam. After you have logged in to the course, you will see the "Request to Certify" button in the module index. When you have completed the course, simple click on the button and we will begin the certification process.

I pressed the "Request to Certify button, but nothing happens. What now?
You may only submit the Request to Certify after completing the full course. You must complete all modules, quizzes and the sample exam, to be eligible to certify. The button will become activated at that time.

When is the certification exam?
Dates and times for certification exams vary. After completing the course and submitting a "Request to Certify" we will provide you with contact information for a health unit near you. It is up to you to arrange an exam time with a Health Unit or approved proctoring site near you. Please refer to the Certification section for more information.
